Join me this winter while I embark on my longest trip to date!

Italian Food & Wandering | Day 11

I wanted to go on a day trip to Tepotzotlán north of the city today, but Claudia texted me last night asking if I could change rooms to a female dorm for the rest of my stay because they had to shift some stuff around. I said sure so I got up early to pack up my stuff.

I got to THIS point, literally just needed to zip up the bag, and Claudia came running in to tell me I didn’t need to move anymore. Greeeaaaaat haha just a little packing practice.

So I unpacked a little and went up for breakfast.

Breakfast today was super yum beans on toast with pico de gallo and guac and a fruit bowl. Those crispy onions are the best too they’re a little spicy.

I was feeling pretty lazy after breakfast so I decided to hold off on the day trip. I worked on my letter of intent for my UofM masters application a bit, then I did some travel bookings for later in the trip and wrote a blog. I had already decided I wanted Italian food today (there’s so much of it here I have no clue why, and I know I had pasta yesterday but it was weird pasta I wanted REAL pasta or pizza) so when lunchtime came around I found a place and walked there.

I was almost distracted and sidetracked by street vendors MULTIPLE times on the way (I was super hungry) but I made it to Marcelleria Roma successfully and I was NOT disappointed. I ended up getting Lasagna for lunch (amazing) and they gave me free focaccia. I then ordered a margarita pizza to-go so I didn’t have to find another place for supper.

I was so happy after this meal and I was walking back to the hostel when I realized there was a cute little antique stand nearby. I’d passed it with Brook the other day but we didn’t have time to stop so I said I’d come back another day and he was open today so I stopped in. This was the nicest interaction I’ve had with anyone so far!! I walked up and said hi and he said “¡Hola! ¡Tienes una sonrisa estupenda!” (you have a stupendous smile) and I obviously thanked him and smiled even bigger and he goes “Gracias para tu sonrisa, tienes que guardarla” (thank you for your smile, you need to keep it) it was so cute. I bought an old postcard from him for 20 pesos.

So after that little detour I was walking back when I saw this cool mural, there’s tons of cool street art in Mexico city.

Then I was on my way straight back to the hostel, but I did get sidetracked one last time and buy a 50-peso cup of mango (the best I’ve had of the entire trip, so thank god I stopped).

The rest of the afternoon I kept working in my bunk, napping a little bit and just hanging out. I’ve been TIRED this week (foreshadowing????) and haven’t felt the need to do toooooo much during the day. As long as I’m somewhat productive I’m happy. I called Kiera and caught up with her a bit, then ate half my pizza when it was time for supper.

It was actually so so good the Italian food here is top tier.

And before anyone starts yelling “WHY ARE YOU EATING ITALIAN FOOD IN MEXICO I WOULD NEVER GET SICK OF TACOS” first of all, yes you would. Mexican tacos are literally just meat and sometimes cheese in an oily tortilla with onions and cilantro, and a bit of salsa. Actually, that’s all Mexican street food except the shape of the corn and type of meat varies. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good, but not for every meal. Second, the smell of oil makes my stomach churn at the moment so we’re taking a break. The pasta and pizza is making me happy right now.

I went to bed without venturing out again today, fully intending to go on my day trip tomorrow. I’ll see you in the next one!
