Kat's Little Adventure Blog

Join me this winter while I embark on my longest trip to date!

First Post | Arrival

Hello from Mexico City! I decided to start this little blog because I have way too many people to update and way not enough time to update you all individually. Tante Diane gave me the idea so merciiii! Hope you have fun reading along!

Maman and I left for the airport around 4:20 this morning (thank you Papa for driving) and waited in a loooong lineup to check our bags before heading over to American security and customs. After a quick Tim’s stop, we boarded and had our first flight to LA. We got lucky and Maman was able to move into an empty seat across the aisle from me, so we each had an empty middle seat between us and the people sitting by the windows. During the descent, I was entertained by a man called Andrew who was telling me all about international beatboxing competitions (hi Andrew, hope you have fun in Antarctica!!). We thought we might see some smoke or fires from the air but there was absolutely none, at least where we flew.

We had about an hour and a half in LAX so we headed off in search of food. We ended up sharing an egg white omelette from Prêt à Manger, and I also had a chicken ranch wrap. Everything was delicious. We met a nice lady travelling to India with her young son and they sat with us until he decided to run away from the table at full speed in search of the play area. We misjudged how long the boarding would take for our next flight and by the time we got to the gate, we were being paged and were the last ones on the plane. Whoops! As soon as we walked onto the plane we realized why boarding was so short, the flight was EMPTY! Our section was only about one-third full and we again got lucky with three seats for the two of us! It was a super easy flight and we landed in Mexico City around 4:40pm. The weather here was around 24°C when we landed, but our customs officer was wearing a full coat. When I pointed it out, he told me to look around and sure enough, all the employees were wearing long sleeves and vests and jackets. We laughed and he sent us on our way without issue.

After going through customs and getting our bags, we got an Uber from the airport to the Wanderlust District hostel where we’ll be staying for the week. Thank you soooo much to Kara for the recommendation it’s been great so far! We have a nice big private room (la Girafa) which is gorgeous! We got to the hostel at 7pm and were shown around by the owner. We then spent a little time unpacking and relaxing before finding somewhere to eat. We chose Taqueria el Torito which is super close to the hostel and looked really good. We had SO much food but it was all absolutely delicious!

We paid MXN 270 ($18.80 CAD) for the torta, three árabe tacos, two al pastor tacos, and one longaniza (sausage) taco plus two beers. I think my favourites were the árabe tacos and Maman loved the torta.

We were both FULL and getting really tired after that meal so we decided to head back to the hostel. We quickly stopped in the Oxxo on the way back just to see what they had in case we need a quick snack at some point.

It’s big time bed time now so I’m going to stop writing, see you in the next one!
