Kat's Little Adventure Blog

Join me this winter while I embark on my longest trip to date!

Cafe Day | Day 74

This morning, I slept in until 11AM. I guess I was tired because even then Kara had to wake me up! I got up and went to the kitchen to make some instant coffee. I finished the leftover pasta salad we made in San Salvador along with some roasted broccoli. I then had my favourite desperation snack, peanut butter on a tortilla. The current tortillas are Bimbo brand, which is basically the Mexican equivalent of wonderbread.

After that breakfast, we headed out to the town. We were going to rent scooters and visit some waterfalls today, but since we were getting such a late start, we decided to leave that for tomorrow. We did some shopping and just wandered around, checking anything out that piqued our interest.

Kara had asked around about surf lesson prices yesterday, so she knew where to go today to inquire about availability. The instructor said he could take her in a couple hours since the tide was a little high right now. She paid $35 US for a 1hr 20min private lesson. I’ve only surfed once in a group and I’d like to do a private eventually, but we think it’ll be cheaper in Nicaragua and I’m a beginner beginner so I’m holding out for a little while.

We went to sit down at a nearby cafe called Maldito Coffee House, and both ordered cold brew lemonade, which I tried for the first time in Puerto. It still tastes like Tang powdered iced tea, but I kinda like it cause it’s more refreshing than coffee and less sweet than lemonade. We sat there for a while and I spent most of the time picking out new phone cases for when I get back home.

When it was time for Kara’s surf lesson, I went across the street to the açai bowl place from yesterday.

I called Keith for a little bit and finalized the phone case order while munching on the same bowl I had yesterday (more strawberries and very yummy).

Kara came back from surfing and we decided it was time to head somewhere for drinks and eventually supper. We ended up at a pupusería, doesn’t matter which one because I forget and it wasn’t very good. We each ordered three pupusas. I had a bean and cheese, a spinach and cheese, and a chicken one. They were all mostly cheese without much else. I think the highlight was Kara’s cheese and garlic one. We accompanied supper with some pilseners.

While we were sitting at the restaurant, there was a huge explosion sound. I was in the washroom at the time, but Kara said she felt the shockwave in her ear. We have no idea where it came from or what it was, it was slightly terrifying!

After that round of pupusas, we decided we wanted to try the sweet pupusas on the menu, we’d never had dessert ones before. I ordered one of each: horchata, hibiscus, coffee and chocolate. The waiter said “and you want all of that to go?” to which I replied yes. A little while later, he came back with four drinks. There was a woman with him, and when she saw the confusion on our faces she said “you wanted pupusas didn’t you”. We said “um, yes” and she turned on the waiter and said “You see??? You need to explain to them that they aren’t pupusa flavours” (they were written directly under the pupusas on the menu and it didn’t say drinks anywhere it was very confusing). She ended up taking the drinks back without charging us for them, then we paid and we heard her telling the guy off as we were walking out of the restaurant.

We had wanted to go to the beach to see the sunset, which we kind of missed because supper took a while, be we went anyways and it was still really pretty.

After the beach, we wanted something sweet since we got robbed of our dessert pupusas so we decided to stop for ice cream.

I had passionfruit and tres leches with chocolate sauce in an edible bowl for $3 USD which is not bad at all. It was really good!

I also had to take a picture of this shop window because I don’t understand why there are tiled penises in all of the souvenir shops here but it’s definitely a thing.

Once we’d satisfied our sweet tooth, we walked back to our hostel and showered before bed. I went out on the hammock and called Keith for a little while which was lovely, but it’s so nice to come out of the humidity into the AC to sleep. I’ve set an alarm so hopefully I don’t wake up so late again tomorrow! See youuuuu in the next one.
