Join me this winter while I embark on my longest trip to date!

Beach Day | Day 17

This is Niina’s last day in Puerto before she makes her way back to Mexico City to fly back home. We went back to Chuchaqui for breakfast because I told her it was good.

I got the same avocado toast as yesterday and tried a coffee lemonade (coffee made with lemonade) to drink. I saw it on the menu yesterday and thought it was so weird I had to try it. It was surprisingly good! It kinda tasted like powdered iced tea.

Just before Niina left, we were joined by our other friend from Mexico City, Ricardo! I said my goodbyes to Niina then caught up with him. He’s been in Oaxaca before coming to the coast. He said he went to the doctor (since he got me sick, we definitely have the same cold) and was told that he had a virus. The doctor gave him meds and he’s feeling a lot better, but I’ve been feeling a bit better too lately so I think I’m probably slowly improving on my own.

We decided to go to Playa Carizalillo today after breakfast so after stopping by both our hostels to get our stuff, we headed up to the main road to catch a colectivo. We had quite a long ride, around 15-20 mins, and we ended up meeting a Dutch girl called Selina who was headed to the same beach. Once we got off the Colectivo, we walked down the 100-ish stairs to the beach. It was beautiful!

Once we got down to the beach, we found a spot (unshaded of course) to leave our stuff. As soon as we got settled, we were approached by a guy who asked if we wanted to go whale watching tomorrow morning! Selina and I had already been discussing it and it was pretty cheap compared to other tours (600 pesos per person), so we got his Whatsapp and will probably do that tomorrow! We spent a couple hours going between the water and laying out on the beach, but by this point (even if we were applying sunscreen regularly), Selina and I were starting to burn bad. We needed shaaaaade and there isn’t really any, as I described yesterday. Eventually we headed to one of the restaurants to have a seat and a drink.

I had a mojito (pretty bad) and octopus tostadas (amazing).

We stretched out the meal as long as possible before heading back out into the sun. By this point I was about to burn to a crisp, but Ricardo wanted to stay for sunset so I found a little shaded corner and we sat there for an hour before returning to the main part of the beach for sunset. By 5:15, the sun was low enough in the sky that it wasn’t super intense anymore and I didn’t have to hide like a vampire.

The sunset was pretty, it was nice to be by the ocean, but we are SO lucky with the skies at home that nothing can really compare.

We went back to our respective hostels to shower and change quickly before going out for supper. We decided to go to Fish Tako, a short walk away from my hostel. It seemed to be just a guy running a taco place out of his backyard. He came up to us and said “okay I have shrimp grilled or fried and I have squid what do you want”. We ordered and then waited over AN HOUR for our food which was a little ridiculous but it WAS delicious at least.

I only have this one shitty picture of my squid taco, I wasn’t super hungry but it was soooo good with the coleslaw and salsas.

After dinner we were so tired, we’d been there a long time, so we said our goodbyes and headed off to our respective hostels to sleep.

See you in the next one!
